First Grade Curriculum
Reading/ Language Arts: First Graders will utilize the Superkids program this year. This program encompasses the decoding of words, reading comprehension, writing, handwriting, grammar and spelling. The Superkids program is built on the principle that reading is most effectively taught when integrated with the other language arts. In addition to using the Superkids series, we will enhance our reading curriculum with reading sites like Moby Max, Suprekids, Spelling City and Epic. First graders will also use the 6 Traits of Writing program this year. We will use this program to write sentence and paragraphs. We will progress to writing expository, persuasive and narrative pieces.
Math: First Graders use a consumable math workbook. The program is complimented with an online component called Connect Ed. We utilize virtual tools and many hands on manipulatives to enhance our learning and understanding. Some of the concepts covered in first grade are; developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20. We will also spend time working on developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones. Later in the year we will focus on developing understanding of linear measurement, weight and volume, reasoning about attributes of geometric shapes, identifying and counting coins and measuring time on an analog clock, probability and symmetry. Science: Our first grade science curriculum follows the Next Generation Science Standards. We will utilize a interactive notebook as well as many digital sources to learn about and explore the concepts of life, physical, earth/space science and technology. Our hands-on science exploration will include the topics of; weather, space, plants, animals, light and sound. In addition we will utilize websites like Brain Pop Jr. and Mystery Science to enhance our learning. STEAM projects and explorations will be taught monthly. Social Studies: Our first grade Social Studies curriculum starts with discussions about school, rules and laws. Throughout the year we also learn about our communities, work, our Earth and it's resources, and our country. We use a weekly magazine called Studies Weekly as well as many on line resources to cover our curriculum. Our Junior Achievement program will be taught during Social Studies time. Our first grade program is titled, Our Families. Religion: Our Religion curriculum includes a study of our Faith, daily prayers, sacraments, church history and traditions. A consumable text book and weekly Promise magazine is used along with many fun and engaging web resources. A Family Life book is also used later in the year to enhance our learning. |
